Due to fortification of foods, especially cereals, only a small percentage of individuals in the U.S. are deficient in vitamin B12. However, because of malabsorption syndromes, celiac disease, gastric bypass operations and conditons of undernourishment (as a result of nutritionally empty calories) such as Alcoholism, it is estimated that up to 10% of individuals could be deficient in vitamin B12.
Vitamin D deficiency and rickets is surprisingly high worldwide. Here in the US an estimated 50% of the teenage population are vitamin D insufficient or deficient. Additionally, 50% of children ages 1-5 are vitamin deficient, and 70% of 6-11 year-olds are. High percentages of African-Americans, Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, and other darker skinned people are also affected, as well as the elderly.
As of 2021, the percentage of white individuals in the US prison population is around 30%.
