Jamaica is not on a continental plate, it is on the Caribbean Plate which is a mostly oceanic tectonic plate underlying Central America and the Caribbean Sea off the north coast of South America. Just to the north of Jamaica is an oceanic transform fault which separates the Caribbean Plate from the North American plate. The evolution and geology of Jamaica result form the gradual movement associated with this transform fault.

With Plate Tectonics, Palawan lies more central to the Sunda plate than the rest of the Philippines. The rest of the Philippine Islands lie in the tectonically active area between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Sunda Plate. The islands were formed by Orogeny with the two plates colliding. Earthquakes in Palawan are said to be very few moderate sized earthquakes (due to not being on a plate boundary). See Wikipedia Links
convection currents in the mantle provide the basic driving forces for plate motions.
