It lasted for eight years with no victor, was mostly fought on the Iran-Iraq border, and fought entirely between Iranian and Iraqi forces. Iraqi dictator Sadaam Hussein started the war. 2) The Gulf War, also called the Persian Gulf War, fought from 1990-91. Iraq invaded Kuwait, prompting many other oil-producing and oil-consuming nations to join an international coalition to expel Iraq from Kuwait. Sadaam Hussein started this war too, which included both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. 3) Sadaam Hussein did not start this one, and nothing he could have done would have prevented a US invasion of Iraq to secure land between the Caspian oil reserves and the Indian ocean. After eleven years of non-participation in the Afghan Civil War, a war that the US caused, US forces were finally committed to Afghanistan. This war is known by the inspiring names of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the War on Terror.
