While it was not a political party in the idea of political parties today, those who opposed the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans (first political party) favored a strong federal (national) government and weak state governments. They took the name "Federalists" as that was the name given to the people who had supported ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
The Democratic Republican Party favored a limited national government. The party, formed in 1828, was led by Andrew Jackson. It is now the oldest political party in the USA.
The Federalist Party was probably the most elitist US political party.

The Federalists were the name given the people who favored ratification of the United States Constitution. The Constitution established a "federal" system of government, hence the name. Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and George Washington were just three examples of the many people at the time that favored the new Constitution. Following the ratification of the Constitution, one of the first political parties founded was also called the Federalist Party. MrV
