How far is the Moon from the Earth?

A lunar distance (LD) is an astronomical measurement of the distance from the Earth to the Moon. The average distance from Earth to the Moon is 384,403 kilometers or 238,857 miles, but the actual distance varies over the course of the orbit of the moon. Depending on the Moon's location in its orbit, it is between 225,623 and 252,088 miles away from Earth. This is about 30 times the diameter of the Earth.Measurements of the lunar distance are made by measuring the time it takes for light to travel between the LIDAR stations on Earth and the retroreflectors placed on the Moon. Experiments show that the Moon is spiraling away from Earth at an average rate of 3.8 cm per year.Orbital distances are calculated between the center of the Earth and the center of the Moon. So the actual surface-to-surface distance is shorter by about 7457 kilometers (4634 miles).Because tides spin faster than the Moon moves, the tidal reaction pulls the Moon forward a tiny bit. The moon recedes at a rate of approximately 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) per year. When there was only one continent, the rate was less..The moon is on an elliptical orbit, so it it not consistently the same distance from earth. When the moon is the closest to earth, it is 225,623 miles away; when the moon is farthest away from earth, it is 252,088 miles away.

What was the popular belief about the Sun and the Earth at the time of Galileo?

Back then the church ruled everything. They told them how to speak, what to do, and how to do something in a specific way. So the church said to belive that all the planets revoled around the earth. Galileo did experiments and told the church that the Earth revoled around the Sun, and that the Sun is in the middle of our solar system. Sadly they didnt belive him, the church gave him home arrest. years later more scientist noticed that Galileo's theroy was right. The church gave in to the idea. Sadly Galileo was dead when his thought was considered correct.

What would a person standing on the moon see during a partial solar eclipse?

It depends where you are on the moon.If you're anywhere on the side of the moon that's visible from Earth, then you'llsee the Earth fully illuminated except for a small black spot somewhere on it ...the region of 'totality' for Earthbound observers of the eclipse. You may also beable to see a larger circular region around the black spot, where the illuminationon the Earth's surface is somewhat less bright. That's the region in which peopleon Earth are seeing a 'partial' solar eclipse, with a part but not all of the sunblocked from their view. You'll see both the black spot and the slightly dingy areaaround it move across the Earth over the period of a few hours. If you are on the side of the moon that's never seen from Earth, then you'll seethe sun in your sky as usual. Unless you're in contact somehow with the folks onEarth, you'll have no idea that anything unusual is happening in their sky.

When is the best time to view the moon?

Do you mean besides at night? The best observation time for any celestial body is when it is as close as possible to straight overhead. This is because there is less atmospheric distortion. When viewing straight up, you are looking through 5 or 10 miles of the thickest air. When looking at something on the horizion, you are looking through 100 miles of air, maybe more. If you are refering to the phases of the moon, you will see craters in the sharpest detail when they are right on the edge between the light and dark part of the moon. A full moon is interesting but does not show the detail of the craters due to a high glare factor. As the moon is going from new to full, you can go out ever night at about the same time and see totally different features.

How did Armstrong get back from the moon?

The lunar lander, Eagle, was divided into 2 sections. The bottom half, called the Descent Stage contained the fuel for descent and landing on the moon. It also contained most of the water and oxygen used on the moon by the astronauts. The top half, called the Ascent Stage, was the part that lifted off from the moon. The Ascent Stage also doubled as the astronaut's home while on the moon. After achieving orbit, the commander, who, in the case of Apollo 11, was Neil Armstrong, docked with the Command/Service Module that orbited the Moon while the astronauts walked on the surface. The Apollo 11 CSM was manned by Michael Collins. After transferring all the lunar samples and astronauts into the CSM, the LM was jettisoned. The 3 men continued orbiting the moon for one more day. On the back side of the moon, Michael Collins told the onboard computer where they were in space and how long to fire the Service Module engine. After the 4 minute burn, the astronauts left lunar orbit and were on their way back to earth. The Service Module engine wasn't very big or powerful. It only needed to have enough power to get them out of lunar orbit and into the gravitational pull of the earth. Once under the influence of earth's gravity, they fell back to earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean after 8 days in space.

What does the moon look like 21 days after a new moon?

A "new moon" indicates no reflected light at all: the Moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun. However, the term is also applied to the first small crescent as the Moon leaves its unilluminated phase.

Is the radius of the moon's orbit 0.6 or 6 or 60 times larger than the radius of earth?

What did Houston tell Apollo 13 to do?

Houston told Apollo 13 astronats to return back to the earth , after orbiting the moon once. In the Lunar module. The moon lander became the savior.

Does the moon affect life on Earth when it changes shape every month?

No....... but yes. The moon does not change shape. The moon is always a sphere and only half of it is ever illuminated by the sun, coincidently the same half always points towards the Earth. The moon then revolves aroung the earth and so shows us the light and dark halves as it goes around. As the moon revolves around the earth, it effects the tides and other things for us here. But mostly no the moon does not change shape. Please send an angry letter on behalf of humanity to whomever told you the moon changes shape.

How come Apollo 13 didn't ever land on the moon?

As the Apollo13 spacecraft exploded in space, they were told to sit in the lunarcraft module, and return to earth.

How did the earth's moon became the moon?

Some four billion years ago a massive body, roughly the size of Mars, struck the nascent earth. The debris from this collision settled into orbit around the earth, like a ring. Within just a few thousand years it had coalesced into the moon.

How does the sun push the moon?

The sun is what directs the light to the moon whcih makes it shine, and if the moon did not shine we ppl couldn't see at night. :)

Why does the moon have no gravity?

It does. Who told you it doesn't? All objects that have mass have gravity. The more mass they have, the more gravity they have. For small objects, the gravity is so weak as to be almost indetectable, even with extremely sensitive instruments. However, the moon's gravity is certainly strong enough to be not merely detectable but to actually physically feel. The moon's mass is about 1/80th that of Earth, but its radius is also quite a bit less; the combination of the two yields a lunar surface gravity of about 1/6 that of Earth.
