The Alien and Sedition Act is where legislation gave the President power to deport any alien he deemed dangerous to the United States. They also gave the President permission to imprison any editor who criticized him for his actions. The only legislation did not allow the President to do was to give asylum to any immigrant he wished.

The President is often given special powers by law during war-time or even threat of war. He also can issue executive orders and give other orders during a war that Congress would not otherwise allow.
