He started as the god of the wind and as the main god of Thebes. Amun means 'hidden' and he is believed to of created himself and his surroundings, and to be able to be invisible [as is the wind]. Later he was combined with the sun god Ra, and they became Amun-Ra, making him king of the gods because that's what Ra was. As Amun-Ra, people prayed to him for mercy for sins and for help.
