James Madison was the president when British soldiers burned the White House in 1814. He left the White House a few days before the British arrived. The White House, the official residence of the President of the United States of America, was constructed in 1800 and inhabited by each subsequent president until the War of 1812, when during the Burning of Washington on August 24th, 1814, the British Army set fire to the White House and burned it to the ground. The White House was re-constructed after the war and has been in continual use since 1817. Therefore the White House has been burned down once, by the British Army in 1814.
In 1812 the British burned the white house in the War of 1812. When it was repaired it was painted white. Paint was very expensive in the 1800's so to have a whole house painted white was very unusual and soon when asked about where the president lived they would refer to the "white house". The name stuck and now it is tradition to call it the White House.

I can not find any record that any US president helped put out fires in the capital. This is not a job for any amateur, especially not a sitting president. The British burned much of the capital in 1814 including the White House, but President Madison fled the city before the British got there. Except that one time, there has never been a fire in the living area of the White House.
