The Declaration was influenced heavily by French philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Locke, Voltaire and Rousseau. These men produced the ideas of natural rights (rights obtained simply by being human), which were summed up as "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" in the Declaration.
Colonial history was also a large influence on the Declaration. In the document, the Founding Fathers listed many actions the British practiced in the Colonies that hurt the economy, the people, or infringed upon their rights.
