The biggest shortcoming that the Patriots had was the lack of a Navy. They began the war without owning a single ship of the line. They owned not a single armed merchantman and they had no meaningful amount of artillery, muskets, shells, shot or gunpowder.
Militias were not trained to a uniform standard, and no common standard existed. No manual of arms was available, there were few men qualified to serve at the highest levels of command. The Continental Army would have to be put together from top to bottom using on the job training.

∙ 13y agoMany problems considering they were less experianced then the British. The summer at Valley forge was terrible as well, being they lost as many men there as they did in the war thus forth. They did have "home field advantage" however
