The railroad line was the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal R.R.'s Altenheim subdivision. Today this is part of the CSX system, though today it primarily carries trains of the Canadian National R.R. (former Wisconsin Central, originally the Soo Line). At the time the superhighway was built, the B&OCT also carried trains of the Chicago Great Western, which was purchased in 1968 by the Chicago & North Western Ry.

The Northern pacific railroad
In 1862 Congress passed the Pacific Railway Act, which designated the 32nd parallel as the initial transcontinental route and gave huge grants of lands for rights-of-way. The act was an effort to aid in the construction of a railroad and telegraph line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean and to secure the use of that line by the government.
