Northern Africa has a close historical and somewhat cultural tie to Europe. The Greeks and Romans established empires that conquered parts, if not all, of Northern Africa. The Europeans then took complete control of Northern Africa during the age of Imperialism. The French, British, and Italian controlled the African Mediterranean lands. This explains why French, English, and Italian are still spoken today in Northern Africa, either as a recreational language or governmental or business language. Morocco, a North African country, even considers themselves to be a Europeanized country and someday wishes to join the European Union, as they have already previously tried doing so.
