He was a Muslim.
Akbar was the grandson of Babur who happens to be the establish er of the Mughal empire. Akbar established a central administration and granted nonhereditary land revenues to his military officer and govt officials. Akbar married a Raj put princess to reconcilate between the Hindus and Muslims and reduced taxation and legal discrimination against Hindu's.
Akbar had 36 wives and over 300 women in his Harem. His 3 major wives were Ruqaiyya Sultan Begum (Muslim; his cousin; married at the age of 9 and his most esteemed wife), Salima Sultan Begum (Muslim; the widow of his advisor, Bairam Khan) and Heera Kunwari/Harkha Bai (Hindu; misnamed as Jodha Bai; she bore his son and successor Jahangir). In addition to this, two facts must be made clear that: 1. "Jodha Bai" was NOT the name of Akbar's Hindu wife. It was actually the name of Jahangir's Hindu wife a.ka. Taj Bibi Bilqis Makani (maiden name Jagat Gosain), princess of Jodhpur (hence the name 'Jodha'). Many people confuse the two names and believe Jodha was the name of Akbar's Hindu wife. 2. Akbar did NOT have a Christian wife. "Mariam/Maryam-uz-Zamani" was the name of Akbar's Hindu wife, after she gave birth to Jahangir. The name Mariam-uz-Zamani means 'Mary of the Age'. As the term 'Mariam' resembles the Christian names like Maria, Mary etc, hence people get confused that Akbar had a Christian wife.

Akbar was one of the great Mughul rulers of India. He was compassionate to the general public irrespective to what religion they belonged to. He treated Muslims and Hindus, Rich and poor the same way and was not partial to anyone. For the peace of the kingdom he accepted one Hindu princess as one of his queen. And the queen had no regrets in her life that it happened for her to marry a man out of her religion. That much was the way she had been taken care of personally by Akbar the Great. He's really "THE GREAT"
Akbar strengthened the Muslim empire by expanding it and conquering many other cities. He took control of most India and killed various other leaders. He was also very tolerant towards other religions and married a Hindu princess so that the Rajputs (very brave soldiers) would not threaten him.

The rule is that, per Islam religion, a Muslim girl could get married only to a Muslim boy. A Hindu boy, per Islam religion, could marry a Muslim girl only if he converts to Islam. However, convert to Islam should be based on a sincere and true belief in Islam and full faith in Islam principles. It should not be just for the Hindu boy to be entitled to marry a Muslim girl. Unfortunately, no information is available on whether some preached this Islam rule in Akbar's dynasty.
Jahangir's eldest son Khusrau was born to him by a Hindu Rajput Princess. Though, his religion was Muslim.
