For the United States Federal Government, the requirements for congressional membership are defined in Article 1 of the constitution.

The congress has two parts: the House of Representatives and the Senate.


The only specific requirement exactly the same for serving in both houses is the requirement that the member be a resident of the state they are representing.


Further requirements for the House of Representatives: Age 25 and a US citizen for 7 years.
Further requirements for the Senate: Age 30 and 9 years of citizenship.
