Davy Crocket went to Texas to help the Texans in their fight for independence from Mexico. He led a company of 65 American volunteers, mostly from his home state of Tennessee. They arrived at the Alamo and joined its garrison shortly before it was besieged by the Mexican army. Since Crocket and several of his men were skilled marksmen they contributed significantly to the defensive efforts; allowing the to hold out for several days despite being heavily outnumbered.
However; on March 6th, 1836 the Mexican army succeeded in overwhelming the defenders; and all of them, including Crocket were killed.
Though the Texans lost the battle of the Alamo it gave their General Sam Huston enough time to organize and train his army, allowing him to defeat the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 22 1836.
