Dorothea Dix was motivated to a life of reform by the year she spent in the UK with the Rathbone family. There, she was exposed to a variety of British reform movements, and saw how they handled their mentally insane citizens. She brought this knowledge back to the US and set about advocating for mental institutions for sick patients in New Jersey.
