Harem politics played a key role in the Islamic States. A sultan's wives and concubines were not above violence in making sure their sons, as opposed to one of the other women's sons, would assume the throne. When a prince became sultan, he would sometimes kill all of his siblings, in an effort to protect his throne. The princes were kept from acquiring any power by being denied an education. The problem was that if the sultan died without an heir, the inheritance would automatically to go to one of the half-brothers, who had deliberately been denied the education and skills needed to rule the countries.
