Gold. Oro. Treasure. Loot.
It was during the rule of Francis I, King of France that France started its significant exploration of North America. Giovanni da Verrazano and Jacques Cartier were two other key figures.
Once gold was discovered in America, countries wanted to capitalize on that and sent more people to settle in North America.
The main reasons for the initial exploration and settlement in north were dreams of instant wealth. After it became clear that their was no such thing, people moved to the new world for religious tolerance, the promise of land, because of hard ships in England (not enough jobs).
Well, in 1607 the first permanent English settlement is created at Jamestown in North America.
This is a disputed answer. Some say the first European explorers to reach America were the Vikings, with Leif Erickson being the first of them. However, the settlement he founded in about the year 1000 AD in what the vikings called Vinland, and was probably on the coast of modern Newfoundland, Canada, lasted only a short time and the Vikings did not follow-up with further exploration and settlement. Erikson's exploration and settlement had little effect on Europe and none that we know of on America. The European exploration and settlement of America that had a lasting effect on both Europe and America was that which followed the exploratory journey of Christopher Columbus (called ChristoffaCorombo in his native Genoa and Cristóbal Colón in Spain) in the year 1492, some 500 years after Leif Erikson.
nt for the settlement of north america
Leif Erikson's exploration of North America is considered successful as he is believed to have been the first European to reach the continent around 1000 AD. He established a settlement in what is now modern-day Newfoundland, Canada, but his exploration did not have a lasting impact on European colonization of the Americas.
Exact date is unknown however, it is believed that the English language reached North America when European Exploration began. Also when the British colonists came to "The New World" (North America) to settle into permanent settlement.
