The role that race and racism took in the Civil War is that during the time of the Civil War black were still slaves. The north was against slavery because they had factories to replace the hard labors of farm workers. The South wasn't as wealthy and so they used slaves in place of factories. The most important role racism and race took was that since the North was against the slavery they decided that the black slaves can travel down to there land and instead of living there, fight for their right for freedom. The black slaves fought against the south in place of most white men for freedom and because the white men didn't want use waste themselves. That is how race and racism took it's role in the Civil War.

Yes as a matter of fact that was one of the major causes of the Civil War. Racism was rampant on both sides in this war, and the war did nothing to stop it. Only one Southern family in four owned slaves, and many Northerners supported the war only to preserve the Union. On his march to the sea, General Sherman's army was followed by escaped slaves who assumed he had come to rescue them. Sherman had them held at bayonet point on one side of a river while his army marched to the other side, and the bridge was destroyed. The rumor spread that Confederate cavalry were coming, and although the Confederacy had no cavalry left to send, many of the escaped slaves drowned trying to swim across the river. At the other end of the spectrum, the Confederate general "Stonewall" Jackson was a scoolteacher before the war, and he also ran an illegal school to educate blacks. The causes of the Civil War were economic, and the ending of slavery was the battle cry, but there are numerous examples of racism on both sides.

Slavery was so important because the North wanted to end slavery all together when the South still wanted it to last.

However, with that said, most Northerners simply wanted slavery to stay in the South. The key role that slavery played was that US President Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure to aid the Union. The slave states of the North were not affected.

No, the civil war was caused by differences in political opinions between the north and the south, like slavery, tarriffs, and other issues. Because the south had a different opinion about these issues, the south seceded, or left the United States, and founded their own country. The USA didn't want this, so they started a war with the south.

P.S

The north was racist and discriminated against African Americans too, but they were just opposed to slavery.

Slavery had been a divisive issue ever since the ratification of the US Constitution. So much so that it is not mentioned in that document nor in the Declaration of Independence. From a political perspective, it was a national problem but, only for those persons interested in abolishing it. Prior to the US Civil War, most people in the North did like slavery, however they did not favor its expansion into the western territories. This is often written about, however, there were no opinion polls on the issue.

With that said, slavery continued to be a controversial issue. One can say with a good deal of certainty

that Union volunteers for the US army did not risk there lives to free slaves. Later, more and more people believed that slavery was an immoral institution. Northern people were sure that after the war ended, that somehow slavery would end. The key political issue remained however, in that the US Supreme Court had ruled that slavery was legal and that the US Congress could not interfere with it. This was in 1857.

Former Southern slaves did fight in the Union army. They were also assigned roles in the Southern armies to perform work assignments such as cooking and carrying ammunition. Very late in the war, and far to late, Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy approved using slaves in the military.
