What of the most significant and frequently overlooked decisions of the US Supreme Court in the US Civil War was its decision as to the date the war began. This was important for a number of legal reasons. So, officially, Fort Sumter not withstanding, the Court declared that what is often called the War Between the States or the US Civil War began on July 13, 1861.

As an aside, Confederate President cited April 15, 1861 as the beginning of the war. Both differ from the day Fort Sumter was attacked.
