If they were not from Britain, people were expected to adapt to British laws. However, British colonists finally had enough of British taxes and revolted. When the colonists made their own government and laws, people were expected to adapt to the rules and laws of The United States of America. This remains true today. (And immigrants to other countries are expected to follow their laws.)
