Depending on the year, use either an OBD1 or OBD2 code scanner. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers.
The '95 Contour has OBD1. You would need a reader for that older system to read the codes properly, and readers for OBD1 tend to be somewhat expensive. The best thing to do is take it to a shop that has the equipment.
I think the check suspension plug is under the hood on the pass. side and you would need a OBD1 scanner to check it. It's usually gray in color and says air suspension on it.
The scanner plug in is under the dash on the drivers side and is the OBD1 system
12 pin ALDL pinouts A, B, E, M jump A+B Turn on key to run-SES will flashout codes. to clear , unhook neg. post on battery for 30 sec.-can also use OBD1/OBD2 scanner! 12 pin ALDL pinouts A, M they are using UART on A - M is 12vdc. get a scanner w/ OBD1-OBD2 protocals, use the OBD1 connector cable, you will pull & erase codes. ( This is a OBD 1.5 Bastard) I use AutoX-ray Codescout 2500 16 pin ALDL pinouts 4,5,6,9,12,14,16 jump 5+6 Turn on key to run-SES will flashout codes. the scanner is nessary to pull and erase codes w/ the 16 pin GM specific(Blue plug) this cable cost extra $80. Or go to junkyard , get a 12pin ALDL w/ A,B,E,D,M pins and wire as such. A to 5, B to 6, E to 9, M to 16 use the supplied OBD1 cable. (This is also a OBD1.5 Bastard)
Obd1, not obdi--is accurate to describe the system used to check the electrical and engine systems on the car.
it should be under the dash, but it is probably an OBD1 and will require a make specific scanner. OBD2 all have the same trapezoidal shape and generic fault codes Thank You for the help! coinslots
The only place that will run your codes is a dealership. Or a mechanic who has an OBD1 scanner. Dealerships charge around 90 dollars JUST to run the code. I learned to live with my check engine light. ha ha
What are the codes The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
it is obd1 so an autozone or advance cannot check it. some shops still have an obd1 scanner tool, you can buy the adapters at the stores above. its pretty pricey to get the adapter tho cause you still need to buy the scanner too. i would take it to a shop unless you know how to jump the ecu to get it to flash(i believe you can do that on nissans too).
