Geologists and seismologists.
I think that, technically speaking, the branch of science is geology (whereas geologists and seismologists are some of the practitioners or specialists of that branch of science). Geology itself has many different fields of study that deal with different aspects of the earth's crust such as volcanology (study of volcanic processes), seismology (study of earthquakes and their detection), geomorphology (study of earth forms e.g., dunes, mountains, rivers, etc.), Paleontology (study of fossils) and so forth.
The earth's crust may indicate that there is a chance, based on its features that geologists should examine below the crust to locate coal deposits as example. The surface of the earth is part of geography. So, a geologist examines below the crust and a geographer examines the surface of the crust and formations above it.
The earth's crust can be 22 miles deep and meets the earth's mantle at that point.
