You will have to change the coolant temperature sender that's directly by the firewall.
There are two coolant temp senders - the other one, by the water pump, controls the electric fan.
You will also have to change the oil pressure sending unit.
I'd highly recommend getting brand-new sending units - they are relatively inexpensive and have a warranty.
The SS had a different dash, with gauges, not idiot lights. I would contact Year 1, online, as they make reproduction parts, and will have everything you will need, from the dash, to the wiring harness you will need to change, to all the new sending units, you will need. The SS, was unique that year.
They "sense" the oil pressure inside the engine. If you have an instrument panel oil pressure gauge the sending unit sends an analog signal to the gauge. If you have an oil pressure "idiot light", the sending unit turns the light on when the oil pressure is low.
Gas Tank Idiot Light
usually the dash on the SS has all your gauges and not idiot lights.
I dont know idiot
Don't feel like your the only one. This is a VERY common thing. Its a lot to explain but I can sum it up for you. The gauges are basically idiot lights. The speed, volts and fuel are the only ones that really matter. I know it might not be what you want to hear but take it from me and my buddies, that have gone as far as changing the pcm. It all controlled by the computer, and the SES light.
Yes. However, if you are changing from idiot lights to needles, or visa versa, the oil pressure and water-temp sensors must also be changed to work properly.
I'm not sure about that but if your looking to make sure you have a real ss look at the gauges as the ss had all the gauges in the dash such as oil, amps, water temp where the regular monte's didn't have the special gauges, they had idiot lights.
Take it 2 a repair shop idiot
There are 3 pods. The left pod has the gas guage and idiot lights. The centre pod is the speedo. The right pod is the tach. There were no full guages for oil and water temp in 1964 - only idiot lights
Try changing the headlight switch.
The sending unit you have may be the type used for an "idiot light" only and your system has a gauge. Try replacing the sending unit with a gauge type.
