The Romans stopped making payments to the Goths, so it made the Goths furious. Then the Goths sacked, or destroyed, Rome in 410 AD.
King Alaric I went to Calabria (the toe of Italy) to set sail for Africa, but the ships were wrecked by a storm and Alaric died. It is thought that Alaric wanted to go to Africa to control the supply of grain for Rome (this area was the breadbasket of the empire). Alaric had appointed Priscus Attalus (a senator in Rome) as emperor in Rome in opposition to Emperor Honorius in Ravenna (the imperial capital). Priscus Attalus was quickly deposed and joined the Visigoths. With the Roman army ready to press on the Visigoths, he advised Alaric's successor, Ataulf, to leave Italy. Ataulf took the Visigoths to Gaul and settled in Aquitaine in the southwest. He helped Honorius to defeat a usurper in Gaul. Romans and Visigoths became allies again. Ataulf married Honorius' sister, Galla Placidia, who had been kidnapped in the sack of Rome and had followed the Visigoths.
Alaric I ordered that the churches in Rome were not to be touched and those who sought refuge there were to be left alone. Despite the great damage caused by three days of looting, the city was rebuilt within a few years and the people who had fled soon returned.
The Empire was enormously successful and controlled a huge area. Yet the Roman Empire began to decline after AD 180. There were many invasions from Barbarians. In AD 395 the Empire was divided into two - a Western and an Eastern Empire.
Rome did not last much longer. It was invaded and almost destroyed in AD 410 and was finally taken over in AD 476. The Eastern Empire (known as the Byzantine Empire) remained powerful up to the Middle Ages.

Far from being the enemy of Rome, Alaric worked as king-maker, installing Priscus Attalus as emperor, and keeping him there despite policy disagreements. It didn't work. Ultimately, Rome's refusals to accommodate a barbarian led Alaric to sack Rome on August 24, A.D. 410.
