You should applaud the teacher for having the strength and morality to discuss such prominent issues in the classroom. Issues such as gay rights and same sex marriage are often not discussed in the classroom making them taboo.

Teachers who endeavour to raise awareness and open the minds of their students should be congratulated for their work. A friendly email to the teacher showing your appreciation should suffice!
