ANSWER 2
1) first try direct preasure as stated above
2) if that doesnt work elevate wound higher than the heart if possible
3) next use one of the arterial presure points above the wound such as the femoral artery in the groin for a leg wound
4) if bleeding continues a tourniquet may be needed if the wound is in a place it can be used - improper use of a tourniquet can be dangerous so learn how to use one

If a lot of blood is flowing, the first thing is to just apply pressure to the wound any place on the body. A clean cloth is a good idea but use your hand if you have to. The second thing is to dial 911 and get help. I don't think the "very tight tourniquet" mentioned below in the first answer is a good idea. A tourniquet would be a last resort and if you ever do use one only make it tight enough to stop the flow of blood. Dependant on where the injury is, typically you would need to apply a very tight tourniquet to the highest point on the persons leg, the higher the better. One of the largest if not the largest arteries runs down the inside of a humans leg "the femural artery" without pressure being applied adequately to this area depending on the size of the would the victim would bleed out in a very short amount of time. Also raising the leg after this has been applied would be advisable.
Pressure would be applied to the femoral artery by pressing on the inner crease of the groin against the pelvic bone
put a plaster on the leg
get a cloth and put preasure on the wound
If it is a minor cut, and not to much bleeding, we give first aid. If first aid kit is available, we clean the wound with spirit then put an aseptic (sterlized) plaster or film-tape. If the wound is severe and bleeding continues, we press on the wound, and call for medical help!
First you are going to want to have someone push one a pressure point. They are under your armpits and under your legs. Then you want to get someone to call 911. After that get gaus on it. You are going to want to reapply it when there is to much blood on it.
Guidelines say to follow the PEEP or Position, Examine, Elevate, Pressure procedure for bleeding management. Position the wound so that it is easy to treat. Examine the wound for severity or objects. Elevate the wound to help reduce the bleeding. Pressure, apply pressure to the wound to help reduce bleeding and promote clotting of the wound. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES!!!

Tourniquets should only be used when profuse bleeding is present which can not be controlled or stopped by other means.
