The best is always to be honest. Tell him that, although you're interested, his predilection for drinking is making you doubt whether a long-term, healthy relationship can develop between the two of you. If you're even asking the question, then you probably already know it's not a good idea to get involved. You can't change him, and if he wants to clean up his life or pursue you, he'll know he has to change for himself. Nice or not, this person is probably self-medicating to deal with some serious issue that is going to become more of a problem with time. Avoid people that abuse any substance to escape reality. Major baggage.
