If you stare at someone, it might mean that they think that you are "nice to look at" meaning you have interesting conversations and they like to listen in. I think that the 8th grader might think you are cute, but they may have another 8th grader on their mind (even a 9th grader). You should get to know them better and see if they tend to flirt a lot.
