What should you do when the person you love gets engaged to someone else but says he still loves you and is just fulfilling a family obligation?

Unless he is of a certain culture that requests this then he is playing you for a fool or letting you down easy. Generally no matter what the culture and he lives in a Western country a man who loves a woman from the bottom of his heart will go against all the odds. Time to move on! BE GLAD YOU ARE NOT WITH SUCH A SPINELESS COWARD! Yuck! You really think you cannot get a decent person? I'm sure you can do MUCH better. Grab ahold of your self esteem and dignity!! Besides the other two very good answer's above, it also sounds like he is trying to set you up for an affair with him after he is married. He's going to try to string you along so you'll still feel loved by him and then he can have his cake and eat it too! Only you're getting the raw end of the deal because you'll be the disposable one in the relationship. I don't think any family obligation is an excuse for that, unless they have kids. It means that he chose the family obligation over you. This was his choice to make and his bed to lie in. That happened to my grandma - she was left, that is - and after that she met my grandpa. She seems to be at peace about it, but I can't imagine that it was easy. If a girl says she loves someone else.. and her name is sam.. and she's doing it because you were stupid.. don't let go of her.. no matter what.. because not being with her is the biggest mistake of your life.. and you will regret it forever.. because she was meant for you and you will always love her and nobody else. RUN! This makes no sense. He is lying. How credible is that claim? Ask his betrothed whether it really is an arranged marriage.
Only if she doesn't love him and you don't mind particularly if your man is officially together with another should you stay;
otherwise you should leave him, even if it hurts you deeply.

My guess is that he's either lying or that he will continue to oblige his family,
meaning he'll keep you as a side dish and dump you
as soon as you cause him too much trouble in his family,
meaning as soon as the affair is found out.
You probably love him deeply or else you wouldn`t even ask such a question;
too bad his love for you is so much weaker, if at all present.
