He gave the sighn that he could not speak.
Zechariah is struck dumb because he doubted the angel's message about his wife Elizabeth conceiving a child in her old age. The angel Gabriel told him that he would be unable to speak until the prophecy was fulfilled as a sign of God's power and faithfulness.
Zechariah
The age of Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, is not known. The only information we are given is that he and his wife were "both well along in years" (Luke 1:7). Zechariah doubts the angel Gabriel's message because Luke 1:18 states: Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."
Zechariah's wife was very old so it seemed impossible. Often when confronted the miraculous, the human mind cannot comprehend the possibility. It shows a degree of unbelief.

Zechariah , John the Baptist's father , was given the sign that he would recover his power of speech once the things foretold by the Archangel Gabriel would come to pass ; this was a result of Zechariah's doubt he would be struck dumb and not able to speak until the day that these things happen .
John the Baptist's parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were happy he was born because they had been childless for many years and viewed his birth as a miraculous blessing from God. They considered him a fulfillment of the angel's promise and a sign of God's favor.
Mary doubted the angel because she was surprised and confused by the message she received, as it seemed impossible for her to conceive a child without a husband. Additionally, she was likely aware of the social repercussions and challenges she would face if she became pregnant under such circumstances.
An angel appeared to Zechariah before John was born and told Zechariah that his wife would bear a son and that he was to name him John. Zechariah at first could not believe this, because his wife was too old to bear children. As a result he was struck dumb until after his son was born. (Luke 1:5-25) When asked what he wished to name the child, Zechariah wrote "His name is John" on a tablet, whereon he immediately recovered his speech. (Luke 1:57-66) The name means "God is gracious" in Hebrew.
