It depends on what type of personality you are looking for, or if your question is fur, or allergy related. Golden's consistently rate as the #1 dog for families. They have a fantastic personality, and bond closely to people. They are however, HIGHLY energetic when young and need lots of exercise. They are not at all suited to being a backyard dog, so house training is important. If you have time to spend with your dog, and are looking for a companion more than "just a pet", a Golden is as close to perfect as you can find. Check your local Golden Retriever rescue if you are ready to adopt. You can find a gorgeous pure bred Golden that has already been spayed or nuetered, and get a history on the pet's background. Often you will be able to adopt a young adult dog that is already house or crate trained, which is the most difficult part of adopting a puppy.

If you were my client, first question I would ask you is in regards to the size of your crate in proportion to the size of your puppy. Unless a dog is sick or has been left in a crate for an extended period of time (more than 6 hours) most puppies will not potty where they sleep. If your puppy is in a crate that is too large for him, he will have the freedom to use the other side of the crate than he sleeps to relive himself. During puppy crate training, the crate should only be big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around and lay back down. This will teach him that the crate is a good place to be.
