∙ 12y agothe soviets didnt want the people to be able to pick if they wanted to live a communist life and in west Berlin You didnt have to be a communist so people tried to ascape communism so they blocked it off so they couldnt

∙ 7y agoDuring the Cold War era, the nation of Germany was divided into West Germany and East Germany, and the city of Berlin was in East Germany. This resulted from the establishment of Zones of Control by the occupying nations, with eastern Germany under the control of the Soviet Union. In response to the establishment of a democratic West Germany in 1947, and a strong anti-Communist vote in the Berlin elections, the Soviets cut off the road and rail access to Berlin through their zone. For about 11 months (June 1947 to May 1948), US and allied aircraft flew in tons of food and other material to the West Berliners, and the blockade was eventually lifted.

∙ 12y agoIn the conference of the big three at potsdam, it was decided that Berlin would be split up between the regions of occupation (remember, England, France, US, and USSR all occupied different zones of Germany at this point). The USSR, wanting to militarily take over Germany ever since the conference at Yalta where they had troops mobilized and ready to charge into Berlin (which was only about 100 miles away).
Anyway, in a response to the idea of splitting Berlin up, USSR goes and blockades all the autoban roads in an attempt to punish the US (which has a large number of people stationed inside Berlin), and you hopefully know the rest.
