The start of WWII was caused by the German invasion of Belgium, after they had signed a nonaggression pact them. France and Britain had just barely signed a treaty that would help Belgium in case of the German's attack. Russia had also signed a nonaggression pact with Germany, but that was later disregarded. The League of Nations did nothing to stop Hitler's rise to power, and his slow gobbling up of Europe. Italy eventually allied with Germany, as did Japan. The US only joined after Pearl Harbor.

When Germany started World War 2 with the invasion of Poland, the main military players opposing Germany were Britain and France. Czechoslovakia and Austria had already been absorbed into Germany. The Soviet Union was involved for a short time as it also invaded Poland. And Finland allied with Germany in an effort to regain territory form the Soviet Union. In short order, most of the rest of Europe was involved (except Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal) as a result of being attached by Germany or of allying with Germany. Spain was involved in a civil war at the time. General Franco was supplied arms and troops by Germany and Italy befor WWII started proper. The first bombs dropped in anger from a plane were dropped on Spain by German aircraft.
