Facing persecution and denied aid by local and federal governments, the Mormons left the borders of the United States for what was then Mexican territory in the mid-1840's. Arriving in the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847, they established themselves in what was then Mexico. A few short years later, the Mexican-American war meant that the territory became part of the United States. The Mormons had already established a government and infrastructure, so applied for statehood as the state of Deseret. Their request was denied and the government slowly granted bits and pieces of the proposed Deseret's borders to neighboring states such as Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada until the current state of Utah was created in 1896.
