There are either 4 or 5.

The southern colonies consisted of the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, and under some classifications Maryland -- it is south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

(Most of Delaware is also, but despite being a slave state, Delaware is more intrinsically linked with Pennsylvania and New Jersey of the Middle Colonies.)

New England : New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut

Middle Colonies : New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware

Southern Colonies : Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia
