In 1960, Nixon carried every state northwest of Texas apart from Nevada and New Mexico. He also carried Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Virginia. In the South, he won Oklahoma, Florida and Tennessee. The rest went to Kennedy apart from Mississippi (which went to a segregationist candidate Henry Byrd) and Alabama (whose electors split their votes between Kennedy and Byrd).

In 1968, Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey won New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, Pennsylvania, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Michigan, Minnesota and the District of Columbia. Down south, independent candidate George Wallace carried Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia after running on a segregationist platform. All the other states were won by Nixon.

In 1972 Nixon was reelected by a landslide and carried every state except for Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia. His opponent, George McGovern, failed to win his home state of South Dakota.

After Nixon resigned in 1974 as a result of the Watergate Scandal, bumper stickers started appearing on cars in Boston saying "Don't blame me, I'm from Massachusetts!"
