There were not three steps of Roman expansion in the Mediterranean, therewere a great many of them. This was a piecemeal process which lasted abut three centuries.. There was the hegemony acquired in Italy with the three Samnite wars and with battles after the victory in the Pyrrhic war, the Annexation of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica at the end of and soon after the First Punic War. the subjugation of the Gauls of northern Italy, the takeover of the Carthaginian possessions in the Second Punic War, the Annexation of Greece, the annexation of Tunisia and western Libya, the bequests of the Kingdom of Pergamon and the Kingdom of Bithynia (both in western Turkey) to Rome by their last kings, the annexation of southern France the annexation of Crete, the Annexation of part of Pontus and Syria at the end of the Third Mithridatic War, the anexation of Cyprus and the annexation of Egypt.

What were three results of the Punic Wars?

Three results of the Punic wars were: 1) the elimination of Carthage as a rival to Rome by destroying the city, 2) Rome gained territory in Spain, Sicily, North Africa and all other places that Carthage had colonies, and 3) Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean area.

Why did Rome add the territory including Carthage?

The First Punic War between Rome and Carthage was a contest over the control of Sicily. With victory they took over the Carthaginian territories in western Sicily. Rome took advantage of a rebellion by the Carthaginian mercenaries to take over Sardinia and Corsica from Carthage. These islands were considered important for the security of Rome because they were not far from the city. The second Punic War was fought in southern Spain as well as Italy. Rome defeated the Carthaginians in Spain and took over their territories there because it was Hannibal's power base. Rome fought the Third Punic War to destroy the city so that it would never threaten Rome again. In the process she took over her home territory in modern Tunisia and western Libya.

How did rome gain controle of Italy?

Rome took advantage of the Etruscans during this time. The Etruscan people had been weakened by the invasion. This gave the Romans the opportunity to eventually expand and take over their territory. Within 100 years, Rome controlled all of Etruria. During that time, it also conquered central Italy and much of northern Italy. In addition, Rome sent its forces south, where Greek settlers had founded a number of city-states. By 275 BCE, Rome had defeated those Greek city-states as well. Rome now ruled all of Italy.
