Masks often have a different significance to different cultures. They can be made for "protection, disguise from real or imaginary dangers and foes, to honor ancestors, gods, animals and spirits; or for a ceremony."(1) Often times, the mask is meant to represent something other than yourself- in short you can be whomever you want to be (Although, most cultures have specific masks and meanings). " Ancient cultures often had a belief that masks would protect the wearer from the spirits that might do them harm. Conversely, masks were believed to safeguard the wearer through association with a spirit depicted by wearing that spirit's mask. " Masks can also be used to denote societal hierarchies or can be used in social events such as weddings. Some even believe that masks can hold a sort of magical power.
In Venice, masks were often used to protect identities while the wearer committed decadent and, often, promiscuous acts. Masks were also used to keep the social hierarchy level-- a nobleman could look exactly the same as a servant; a country man, a spy during those times. Of course, they were also used in Commedia Dell'Arte--comedy plays. As such, certain characters often had certain types of masks (allowing the audience to deduce more easily which character was which. (3)
In Elizabethan England, the masks were often luxuriously decorated. Masks, like in Italy, often made appearances in plays-- one of the more famous plays featuring a mask is Romeo and Juliet. (Romeo disguises himself to attend a Capulet ball and meet Juliet) (4)
Masks today, can be used for masquerades or celebrations as well as a variety of other things. As such, I'm sure many masks have their own unique stories.
