The strategy of the Vietnam War; was to destroy the enemy by "ATTRITION." To "Attrit the enemy." The tactic used was to "Search and Destroy"; victories were measured by the "BODY COUNT." The North Vietnamese used their environment to their advantage. They knew the land better than the Americans and had shorter supply lines. The Viet Cong had many sympathizers in the South and could hide among the civilian population.
They knew the jungle trails and could ambush American patrols then disappear back into the jungle. They set booby traps and mines and reportedly even used children as human bombs.
Well, Vietnam was a difficult war for the US to fight because of the approach the Vietcong took in the war (building underground trenches and tunnels and emerging at times we were not expecting them to). They elected to fight in a manner known today as "Guerrilla Warfare", or applying "hit and run" tactics into their military strategy. This threw the US Military off, as we were used to fighting wars in direct combat, where two sides would line up and fight. We continued to fight with our soldiers on the ground, but we also began incorporating more modern techniques, primarily things such as air-based warfare. The US began to drop bombs on outlying cities. The most notable of bombing stints is known today as operation "Rolling Thunder". As it became increasingly apparent that our dropping of napalm and bombs of the like was not sufficient in defeating the North Vietnamese, the US turned to the use of the chemical called "Agent Orange" which was meant to destroy the foliage and kill the plants in the jungle to make it easier for the soldiers to see and navigate through the area, which would in turn make it easier to fight.
After these attempts all failed, the US turned to the Atomic Bomb, which in two bombing runs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, would put an end to the war.
