You should be prepared to drive a fire truck, so driving would be one subject that would be good to know. Other than that, fire fighting is really its own subject.
You must be literate and physically fit. You must know first aid, CPR, and how to administer oxygen appropriate for the age and weight of a smoke inhalation victim if EM T's not on scene. You also need to know how to do the fireman's carry [over your shoulder] and be able to do it climbing up and down a ladder. You must know how to use and care for your equipment, how to follow orders, and how to work as part of a team. You should also understand the dynamics of fire and how to recognize when a structure is going to collapse.
This is a very demanding job. It can be very fulfilling, but can put pressure on your family life due to shift work and stress. Like police and MTs, you see people at their best and their worst. You must help EVERYBODY who needs you. There is no room in Public Service occupations for discrimination of any kind. Most firefighters are EMT's and paramedics, so human anatomy is also essential. Many of these sciences are applied to firefighting.
