The Northwest Territory which includes the present states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, were ceded to the United States by Great Britain following the revolution. Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 which included the West side of the Mississippi, the Great Plains, and the Pacific Northwest. The US annexed Texas in 1839, and won California and the American Southwest from Mexico in the resulting war, but then compensated Mexico for the land afterwards, in the 1840s. By the time of the Civil War, the land area of the continental United States was the same as it is today. The difference is that most of the land was US Territory; whereas today, all of the territories have become states.
