Fort Sumter was the first and start of the civil war. It began on April, 1864. Fort Sumter was a federal fort located in Charleston Harbor and the general, Major Anderson, refused to give up the fort after the Confederate states had forced him to. Anderson said that he would not give up the fort unless the government told him to. Eventually, the Confederate states attacked and Anderson had to give up the fort after they ran out of ammunition.
