Temple University was founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell, who lived from 1843 to 1925. He was a Baptist minister, orator, philanthropist, lawyer, and writer. In 1882, Conwell came to Philadelphia, where, in addition to leading the Grace Baptist Church, he tutored members of the working class at night. The classes were taught in the basement of of Conwell's Baptist Temple. Temple University's name originates from this, and its mascot, the Owl, originates from the fact that Conwell's students were called 'night owls.' Philadelphia granted a charter in 1888 to "The Temple College of Philadelphia" but the institution was not incorporated as a university until 1907. Conwell is buried at Temple University's Founder's Garden. In addition, Russell Conwell delivered a sermon in 1878 called Acres of Diamonds. He would give this sermon over 6,000 times. The theme of Conwell's sermon was that God wanted all Americans to be wealthy. Some of his followers declared that the sermon was second only to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

Yes, Russell Conwell's "Acres of Diamonds" promotes the idea of personal responsibility and hard work leading to success, which aligns with some aspects of social Darwinism. However, the book does not explicitly endorse the more extreme elements of social Darwinism, such as the belief in the superiority of certain individuals or races over others based on natural selection.
