Are Pentium 4 class CPU interchangeable on the same motherboard?
Not necessarily. There have been three different sockets used for Pentium 4 processors (Socket 423, Socket 478, and LGA775). They are not interchangeable without special adapters. Even when pin-compatible, motherboard updates may be necessary for the processors to actually work.

Their processors, however, can still stand up to an equivalent Intel processor without a noticeable performance difference. If you're still interested in even higher performance, or up to 12 cores on a single chip, check out Intel's Xeon line or AMD's Opteron line. These are server processors which require special equipment, but are generally regarded as some of the fastest and most powerful processors in the world.
