What role did Captain John Smith play in the early success of the Jamestown settlement?

He basically saved the ailing colony. By 1608 half of the colonists in Jamestown had died, leaving only fifty three emaciated survivors. John Smith came to Jamestown and was elected president in September of 1608. He enforced military discipline and negotiated with the Indians for food for the colony. He later returned back to England and the colony came close to collapse again. If you want to read more about Jamestown, I'd suggest reading Paul Johnson's History of the American People pages 23-28. That's where I got my information.

Where was the first post- explorer settlement located in Virginia?

In late 1606, the three ships sent by the London Company landed at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. However, they were abruptly attacked by some of the Natives, and forced to move. They eventually settled on the banks of James River, (named for King James I), and it was known as Jamestown.

Are you allowed to use more than five subcategories for one question?

No, you are not allowed to choose more than five categories for one question. In fact, now you can't even choose more than three for one question. This is because one question shouldn't belong in more than three categories because of all the diverse categories there are now in WikiAnsers.

Where did the colonists first settle in America?

The first colony was the "lost colony" of Roanoke, an island off the coast of South Carolina. This colony disappeared and historians still don't know what happened. The next colony was Jamestown. Jamestown was begun in 1607 by a group of investors who sent 104 men to look for gold. They landed in an area that was swampy, with bad water, and had over 8,000 Native Americans living in the area. Within six months only 34 men were still alive in Jamestown. The colony was saved by the introduction of tobacco. In 1620 the Pilgrims landed in Mass after being blown off course and founded Plymouth colony. There were 60 men, women, and children. Three young sisters were sent alone by their father because he was going through a divorce with their mother. The girls didn't not live very long after arrival.
