The Romans did not retake Jerusalem. They did not loose this city during the Bar Kokhba revolt or Third Jewish Revolt (132-136). In 136 the emperor Hadrian took measures to prevent further rebellions in the whole of Judea and Galilee. He tried to stamp out Judaism, which he saw as a hotbed of rebellion. He banned the Hebrew calendar and the Torah, burned sacred scrolls, executed 12 Jewish scholars and had a statue of himself and one of the Roman god Jupiter erected at the former Jewish temple. To eliminate the memory of Judea he renamed the area Syria Paleastina. He also renamed Jerusalem Aelia Capitolina (after the name of his family and the name of the Capitoline Hill in Rome) and continued the work to rebuild it as a Roman city which he had started in 131. The Jews were forbidden from entering it, except on Tisha B'Av, an annual Jewish fast day
