Because of her "failed" wedding. Her whole wedding was planned out, but the man that was "suppose" to marry her didn't show up at all, until "twenty minutes to nine," at 8:40 AM, she received a letter from him, stating that he will not marry her. And from that day, Miss Havisham stops her clocks at 8:40.
When Miss. Havisham was a younger adult, her wealthy father died. He left all his wealth to the young Miss. Havisham. She soon fell in, head over heels, love with a man named Compeyson, who was actually only with her because of her abundance of money. Her cousin, Matthew Pocket, warned her to be careful, but she was blinded by love. About twenty minutes before their wedding, while she was dressing, she received a letter from Compeyson. She then realized he used her and she was left at the alter. Embarrassed and heartbroken, Miss. Havisham stopped all her clocks in her decaying mansion, Satis House, at 8:40. She remained in her wedding dress, and leaves her uneaten wedding cake on the table and only allows a few people to see her.
I had a school essay on this. Hahaha.
She stopped it when she got the letter that said her husband-to-be no longer wanted to marry her. Symbolically, that is the moment that her life stopped, or that she keeps reliving... the thing that she's never been able to move past, so in essence, time has stopped for her.
