If there is a lien it is normally listed on the Title.
To find the lien holder of a vehicle, the registered owner of the vehicle will have to apply for a duplicate title. The VIN will be necessary to obtain the duplicate title. The lien holder will be listed on the duplicate title.
You go to the DMV in your area and have them do a lien check. If the title is from out of state you must contact that state dmv for the same purpose. If a lien-holder is noted on the front of the title, you may also contact them to determine if the lien has been released. Obtain a copy of the release statement.

The title company can also provide you with copies of the mortgage/lien documents.
