it could be a thermostat but before you get that fixed ( about $30.00) check your fuses, usually in the front dash near the driver side. the fuse for your air could be burned out they only cost .25 if your carstarts to over heat turn your air off and your heat on. i know its hot but it works.Answerif auto trans try a separate cooler for the trans
I have a 1998 TJ with 4.0 L w/ 5 spd, 31x10.5x15 tires, and get 21 mph driving to/from work (25 miles each way, half town, half hiway). All oils are synthic and that makes a HUGE difference.
The only small SUVs with a body on frame is the Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Nitro, Jeep Liberty. All the rest are large SUVs.

50% water to 50% coolant is the standard unless you live in a very cold climate where it goes down to -25 degrees F or lower, then you may want to mix 25% water to 75% coolant but never straight coolant.
Is there a lot of backfire? Check your oil, see if it looks milky, in color. If so a blown head. I hope it's a lesser problem. From Mytyme
